Back in the mid-1990's, several farm families came together to form Grassland Beef. The mission was to bring to market a more nutritious selection of meats from cleaner, greener, sustainable farms. The family farm was fast becoming a thing of the past and needed a jumpstart. In order to stay a step ahead, the farm families of Grassland Beef had begun to experiment with time honored land management techniques, employing rotational grazing, building soil biodiversity and planting native forages. The cattle loved the new conditions and salad bar diet.
Lab tests on the meats exceeded expectations. Results showed Grassland Beef's grass-fed, grass-finished beef had significantly higher nutrient content than typical, conventionally raised cattle, containing higher levels of healthy Omega-3’s, Conjugated Linoleic Acid, branch chain amino acids, and vitamins.
Quality starts from the ground up and in the case of meats, soil quality and forage are vitally important. Grass-fed and grass-finished meats have a different nutritional makeup. Better food, better nutrition and better health means more energy, and better overall quality of life.
In 2006, Marian Burros, of the New York Times, ran a food series examining grass-fed beef and its producers. She reviewed the meats from various suppliers and gave her unsolicited opinions in the series. “It has taken me three years to find a piece of grass-fed beef that is tender, juicy, meaty and available online… the steaks from Grassland Beef [now U.S. Wellness Meats] are satisfyingly delicious.”
